Gears of War 2 Map Pack Impressions

Epic Games has released its first map pack for Gears of War 2 relatively quick, just over a month after its original release. While many gamers want Epic to address the multiplayer issues with Gears, this map pack will have to appease them for now.

The Combustible Map Pack contains 3 maps and will set you back 800 Microsoft Points. Flood, Gold Rush, and Fuel Station are all comparable in size to the other Gears multiplayer maps and all are compatible will all multiplayer modes including Horde.

Gold Rush

You will play on an abandoned Imulsion Mining Facility. There are two main routes on Gold Rush, one high and one low. The high ground gives you the sniper/torque, while going low gives you boomshot/mortar. Expect lots of long range fighting with the occasional chainsaw rush. Gold Rush is my favorite map out of the three new maps with its intense battles over power weapons.

Flood

Set in the remains of a city the Locust sank, you will have to worry about more than just chainsaws. Surrounding the level is a lake of Imulsion aka “juice”. The juice will rise and fall as you play the level making for some interesting gameplay. If you get caught in the Imulsion it will damage you over time so don’t stay in it for too long otherwise you’ll be watching your buddies play. Flood feels small than the other two maps with all the action funneling into the middle of the map. Close combat is the name of the game here so toss your smokes and start revving your chainsaws.

Fuel Station

Not much to explain on the setting of this map. It takes place around; you guessed it, a fuel station. There are a couple of fuel trucks around the fuel station that you can use to your advantage. If you see an enemy take cover behind one of the trucks a couple of shots at the fuel tank will take care of them. There will be plenty of long range combat on this map all though you will get the opportunity to get close with your shotgun.

This map pack will please any Gears 2 fan with its different sizes and playing styles and support for all multiplayer modes including Horde.
