Mirror’s Edge Demo Impressions
EA and DICE have recently released a demo for Mirror’s Edge on Xbox 360 and PS3. Will this free-running inspired adventure be unique enough to go up against the major AAA titles or will it be overshadowed them?
The demo begins with a training level that will teach you the basic gameplay mechanics. After the training level you get to play a mission from the story. You don’t really get a feel of the story from the demo except that you are delivering packages and for some reason you’ve pissed off the cops enough for them to shoot you on sight. Hopefully the full game will expand on why you’re delivering these packages.
The controls are good and responsive. The combat in the game is mostly melee although you will be able to pick up the occasional gun. I wouldn’t expect guns to be major factors in the final game since you are trying to avoid the enemies not rush towards them. You can also disarm your enemies, which lead to some pretty cool takedowns. Mirror’s Edge really isn’t about combat though; it’s all about free-running. The free-running aspect of the game seems to work well. They do a good job of giving you a sense of speed by using motion blur on the sides of the screen. It’s pretty damn cool when you first jump off a building and then tuck into a roll when you land.
Mirror’s Edge is a great looking game. They do a good job of telling the player exactly where they need to go by adding color to all the obstacles they are supposed to run towards. This does seem to make the game rather linear though if you know right where to go all the time. Maybe in the later levels there will be alternate paths you can take, but in the demo there was pretty much only one way to go.
Mirror’s Edge is a unique game. It’s nice to see developers try something new and not the same action shooters all the time. But, with all the AAA titles coming out this year such as Gears 2, Resistance 2, and Little Big Planet among others, it will be interesting to see if the average gamer will be willing to give Mirror’s Edge a chance. Only time will tell.

Mirrors Edge is definitely one of those over looked gems. Sales wise you know what I’m talking about. It’s sad to see a title like this that pushes the platforming gener be over shadowed by an array of great titles that came out before & after its release. Regardless it is still a great game to run through literally. Even though its a tab bit short its fun none the less. My 1st foray into Faiths shoes was on the Xbox 360. Not everyone will have the same view as me but I loved it regardless. A few instance’s that took a lot of trail, error & patience. The pavement below me was that friend you like to keep far away but always seems to show up at the wrong time. Falling sucks but thats just a small part of the experience. I loved stringing moves such as running, jumping, sliding under things & ext into string combos. When you pull of a ridiculous string that you had no clue could be done its instant gratification. Graphics wise looked great. Now it’s been a few months & my role as Faith was gone & behind me till just recently when I picked up this title for PC. Though the tutorial tells you what to do with the keyboard it still felt alien to me. The experience was so fluid with the controller it is still taking some getting used to on this keyboard. I have my settings set to max & the graphics compared to the 360 counter part are extremely better. The city though mostly white looks beautiful everything is fluid & playing with psychics enable things such as plastic drapes that you would see lets say in one of those industrial freezers or loading bays is loads of fun. I’m still early into this game on PC but its looking way better compared to 360. When I get through this I’ll tell you more about it but for now my time with Faith will be pretty sweet. Lets just hope EA can look past the sales figures & give us a sequel to a gem like this. In time who knows might become a cult classic like Shadow of the Colossus on PS2 but that game is on a whole different level.
