EVE Online New Player Experience
CCP, the developers of EVE Online, recently released the eleventh major expansion, Apocyrpha. The game offers numerous features, including new ships, thousands of new star systems, and the “New Player Experience”.
As most gamers know, EVE Online has the steepest learning curve of all current MMOs. Before this latest expansion, the game’s tutorials showed you the basics and then thrust you into a massive world with no sense of direction. Now, with Apocrypha, CCP hopes to remedy that problem and make EVE Online appeal to a broader audience.
When you begin EVE Online, the first thing you will do is customize your character. There are four playable races in EVE Online: the Amarr, Caldari, Gallente and Minmatar. It doesn’t seem to matter which one you pick, as the only thing different is your starting position. After you select your race and bloodline, and customize the look of your character, you are ready to venture into the world of EVE Online.
CCP has added a new tutorial appropriately named “Crash Course.” This tutorial takes you through the basics of EVE Online, including maneuvering your ship, combat and skill training. As the tutorial progresses you receive new items and new skills to train. The biggest change in skills is the new skill queue. This allows you to queue multiple skills to train in a 24-hour period, which is helpful for gamers who don’t play all day. One thing that differentiates EVE Online’s skill training from other MMOs is that it occurs in real-time, so even if you are not playing, your skills still train.

At the end of the tutorial you are introduced to the three main paths to take in EVE Online: Industry, Military and Business. An agent (quest giver) is also introduced for each path. This should help new gamers to EVE Online decide which path they would enjoy the most. These quests consist of mining and creating objects for Industry, delivering objects and some mining for Business, and combat for the Military. Each mission increases your knowledge of how the game works. Players can venture out on their own at any time; EVE Online is heavily focused on exploration and letting players find their own path.
Technically speaking, EVE Online looks and sounds great. Gamers are treated to impressive graphics showcasing nebulas, star systems and space stations. The music is a good mood-setter, whether you are in combat or flying peacefully through space.
Overall, EVE Online is definitely taking steps in the right direction, especially with the revamped “New Player Experience.” Gamers should at the very least give the free trial a shot. While it won’t take the MMO crown away from World of Warcraft, EVE Online is a good second option.
