Resident Evil 5 Demo Impressions

Capcom is back with another entry into the Resident Evil series. Gamers can try out a couple levels right now on the demo available for the Xbox 360 and PS3. The demo offers single player and co-op for both online and offline.

You play as Chris Redfield, many long time Resident Evil fans will remember Chris from the first Resident Evil. You will also be joined by Sheva Alomar, she is a B.S.A.A. agent and acts as your partner during the game. Resident Evil 5 takes place in Africa or at least what looks to be Africa. There are two levels in the demo, Public Assembly and Shanty Town.

Public Assembly begins with a cutscene many gamers have already seen from previous trailers. After that it’s time to kill some zombies. The zombies in RE5 behave much the same way as the ones in RE4, even down to their death animations. They come out you with various weapons including hatches, bottles, and crossbows. In both levels you will fight a mini boss, basically an enemy that is bigger and badder then the rest of them. One carries a large axe the other a chain saw. Shanty Town is the first time you will see how co-op really affects the gameplay. At one point you will help Sheva get to another building so she can help unlock a door that you cannot reach. During this sequence you will have to protect her as she makes her way to ground level. It’s an interesting mechanic Capcom put into the game and works well when you are playing co-op. Overall, both levels look great and the boss fights at the end of each level were pretty good.

Graphically, Resident Evil 5 is one of the best looking games out there. From the character models to the lighting and explosion effects it looks great. The only gripe I have is the menu system for your guns and other items. I think it could look better, but that is a small gripe in an overall impressive looking game. While there are no truly scary moments in the game, there are plenty of tense moments. It looks like Capcom ditched the whole “go down a dark corridor and have something jump through a window or wall to scare you”. Instead, Capcom builds tension through the pacing of the game.

The controls also help build the tension. They are pretty much a carbon copy of RE4. For those who haven’t played a Resident Evil game you have to stop to shoot. This isn’t like most shooting games where you can shoot from the hip. While gamers may see this as bad controls, it’s actually more of a design decision by Capcom. If you could shoot while moving the game would be boring. There is also a melee component, this helps conserve ammo which there is never enough of. The enemy has to be stunned before you can to a melee attack. Once stunned you can do a variety of puching actions including hooks, straights and uppercuts. You can also stomp on them when they are down on the ground. While not as cool as curb stomping from Gears of War, it still gets the job done. The only problem with the controls is the inventory system. You can map 4 items to your d-pad, but even with that the inventory system still feels clumsy. With that said the controls for the most part are good.

Capcom is looking like it will deliver another good game in the Resident Evil series. While the demo may not have a lot of scares, we will have to wait and see what the full game will offer when it releases on March 13.
