Skate 2 Demo Impressions

While we wait for the full version of Skate 2 to hit storeshelves on Jan. 23, we can get a small taste of what the full game will offer right now with the demo EA has released on Xbox Live and will release on Jan. 15 for PSN. The demo highlights the gameplay additions and runs you through a refresher course of Skate’s controls.

There are two modes available on this timed demo: Career and Party Play. Career mode starts off with you customizing your character. The customization options are good, allowing you to customize your physical appearance along with the clothes you wear. After that you learn you have been in the slammer in between Skate and Skate 2. Now you’re on your board looking for Slappy’s Skatepark. As you make your way to Slappy’s you will learn how to go under obstacles, ollie over gaps, and move objects. Once you get to Slappy’s Skatepark you will meet up with Slappy and some friends to do some challenges. These include doing flip tricks and grinding rails. Flip tricks are done using the right thumbstick and grinding rails are done by jumping and landing on the rail. It’s pretty much the same control scheme as the first Skate. The only control differences in Skate 2 are getting off your board and moving objects. After you finish the challenges you will have about 6 or 7 minutes left to check out Slappy’s Skatepark for yourself.

The second game mode is Party Play. You can only play locally with up to four players. There will be plenty of online options in full game though. There are two different game modes inside of Party Play: Session Spot and Hall of Meat. In Session Spot you have 12 seconds to get to the “spot” and try and pull off the best trick. There are 3 rounds and whoever has the most points at the end wins. In Hall of Meat you have 15 seconds to create the best wipeout. Same amount of rounds as Session Spot and whoever has the highest amount of points wins.

There are not a lot of changes between Skate and Skate 2. Besides getting off your skateboard and moving objects around that’s about it as far as the demo goes. I guess EA took the “if it’s not broke don’t fix it” approach. With no competition in this genre, this is the only skateboard game to get. Luckily for us it’s a good one.
