Showcase: Lord of the Rings: Conquest

Pandemic, the creators of the Star Wars: Battlefront series are trying their hand at a new Battlefront inspired game, LOTRC will revolve around the Lord of the Rings universe. They have released a demo on PSN and Xbox Live featuring a single player tutorial and multiplayer.

The tutorial takes you through how each class works and how the game is played. There are 4 classes and 1 hero class. You can play as an archer, warrior, mage, or scout and the hero class is depended on which side you play as, the good has Gandalf and Ents and the evil has Sauramon and Trolls. All of the classes have their strengths and weaknesses. Archers are effective a long range, but vulnerable up close. Warriors are your tank, they have lots of health and do lots of damage but are vulnerable to ranged attacks. Mages are a support class and also an effective all-around class if you know how to use them. Scouts have the ability to become invisible and can kill with one hit when they attack from behind.

Multiplayer supports 8v8 and has dedicated servers for ranked matches. The objective in multiplayer is to take over the control points. Whichever teams has the most control points starts gaining points, if you get control of them all and hold them you will win. I’ve played for over 3 hours and haven’t noticed any lag. I did encounter a weird stuttering when my character moves around, but it didn’t happen every time I played. Graphically, Lord of the Rings: Conquest is not going to blow anybody away but they are good enough.
The demo has two maps, Minas Tirith and The Shire. While you would expect Minas Tirith to be a huge map it feels small with each control point close to each other. Both maps are good although The Shire is a little big, but there are also mounts on that level so you can travel faster. There is one thing I hate about The Shire, why in the hell can are character not swim. If you even put a toe in the water you die. Other than that I had a great time playing the demo. I do hope in the final game they give us a more epic experience while playing. We’ll know for sure when Lord of the Rings: Conquest is released on January 13.
