One-Night Stand with the New Call of Duty WAW Maps

Editor’s Note: Our One-Night Stand articles are mini reviews, where we spend one night with a newly released game and give you our thoughts of it after a few hours of play time (anywhere between 4 and 6 hours of actual gameplay).

Last week Treyarch launched the first map pack for Call of Duty: World at War, with three new multiplayer maps, ranging from the South Pacific, a bombed out German city, and one zombie co-op map set in an asylum. The map pack costs 800 Microsoft Points and $9.99 on the PSN. We spent one night with the maps to see if they are a must buy for COD fans.

Station

Station takes place in a bombed-out train station many will recognize from the single player Russian campaign. With water pouring in from above, players are in for lots of frantic action near the elevated platform in the center of the map. Station is long and narrow with good sniping spots in each spawn, and branching paths on both sides of the map where the action will be up-close-and-personal. Headquarters and Domination are two game types that work well on this map.

Knee Deep

Set in the South Pacific, Knee Deep is the largest of the three new maps. Cover here is provided by huts and military bunkers scattered across the map. A muddy river cutting through the playing field sets the stage for intense firefights near the bridges on each side. Knee Deep is my favorite of the three maps and plays great on all game types.

Nightfire

Nightfire sets you up to battle it out in the ruins of a German city. While it takes place at night, players will have no trouble seeing due to the numerous burning buildings. There are plenty of multi-story buildings around the map, so expect snipers to be camped there. Street-to-street and building-to-building fighting is the hallmark of Nightfire. Preferable gametypes include Deathmatch and Search and Destroy.

Zombie Verruckt

Set in an insane asylum, you and three friends will once again battle the zombie horde. Treyarch has made numerous improvements over the first map — the most notable being the size of the new zombie map. You begin the game separated from your teammates, split in two teams of two. Your main goal in the early levels is to get both teams together at the power room. Turning on the power allows you to activate the electric defenses and use the brand new Perk-Cola Machines, which will give you numerous perks, including juggernaut, double tap and quicker revives, just to name a few. You’ll also notice how much more aggressive and faster the zombies are this time around. Even after scoring a headshot on a zombie, it will still try to attack you. You will have to rely more heavily on teamwork in this map to make it to the later levels.

Zombie Verruckt is a welcome addition to the zombie co-op maps. It takes everything from the first one and kicks it up a notch with a more expansive map, more aggressive zombies, and the addition of the Perk Cola Machines. Fans of the original will definitely enjoy it.

Final Word

Over the course of the few hours playing the maps, we found that the maps added more replayability to the game. If you still enjoy Call of Duty: World at War regularly, then this map pack is for you. With three new multiplayer maps and a brand new Zombie co-op map, fans of COD: WAW will be enjoying this map pack for months to come.
