Weekly Roundup for April 11: A Week of Announcements

With the holiday weekend one would have thought this would be a slow week. Not so. With a trailer of BioShock 2 gameplay to details of the forthcoming Assassin’s Creed 2, this week was jammed with enough news to fill up a month.

BioShock 2

Easily one of the most anticipated sequels, BioShock 2 takes place 10 years after the first game and lets the player control the first Big Daddy ever created in Rapture. Visually the game looks even more stunning than the original and can be seen in the video below. This game should definitely be on everyone’s watch list and is slated to release late this year.

Punch-out!! for the Wii

Gametrailers grabbed the exclusive first look at the versus mode (split-screen) for the hotly anticipated Punch-out!! for the Wii. Whether or not this game will have full featured online has yet to be confirmed.

Assassin’s Creed 2

Who doesn’t miss a little hidden blade action? Set in early Renaissance Italy, players play as Ezio Auditore de Firenze, an ancestor of Altair / Desmond. Ezio will have access to a range of weapons including an axe, a hammer, a mace, spears and two hidden blades. A new gameplay mechanic gives Ezio the ability to swim, which should make for a few interesting action sequences. A full rundown of the Game Informer exclusive can be found at Screw Attack.

Killzone 2 DLC

Earlier in the week Gametrailers snagged an exclusive announcement regarding Killzone DLC. Set to be release later this month the DLC includes two maps - Wasteland Bullet (takes place on two trains) and Vekta Cruiser (to state the obvious it takes place on a Vekta Cruiser). As per Guerilla’s head this is just the start of DLC support Killzone 2 will receive. Video of both maps is below.

Halo 3 Mythic Map Pack

Released just in time for the holiday weekend, the Halo 3 Mythic map pack offers players three new multiplayer maps to kill each other on. Priced at 800 points players can either be sold by the glowing marketing text on Xbox Live or the fact that everyone else has already downloaded them. What were you waiting for again?

Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor

The standalone expansion to the previous Company of Heroes games was released this past week. While not as good as the previous games, it does offer up some interesting multiplayer game types that are sure to interest fans of the series. Stay tuned next week for a mini review of the game.

Borderlands

It’s cell-shaded. No it is not cell shaded. Hey it kinda looks cell shaded. That was the synopsis of the argument between Kotaku and Gearbox earlier this week. The new PC Gamer showed off an in-game character and while not technically cell shaded it is not your normal rendering either. In any case the game still has a ton of interest and looks incredible early on.

Prototype Gameplay Trailer

Mindless fun. That sums up what the gameplay looks like on Prototype. Oh and it will probably cause half of Fox News to stroke out. The game is that hyper-violent. Gameplay wise it will remind players somewhat of Crackdown. With a release date on June 9, Prototype looks to be a solid multiplatform game to take you through the summer.

Looking in the rear-view mirror over the past week it is easy to see that E3 is rapidly approaching and game companies are starting the trickle of new announcements as we head towards June. Stay tuned to Gamer Discord here and on twitter for the latest news, opinion, announcements, and trailers.
